The project consists of the realization of a roof for a new municipal market in Esplugues de Llobregat, Barcelona, with a floor area of 2,850 m2 and accommodating a triangular geometry defined by the plot itself.
Windmill's mission was to design a spatial structure using tubular profiles, which are connected by steel spheres, in accordance with the architectural design. The structure rests on 9 support points distributed on the plot, with spans of more than 22m, generating a continuous overhang on its perimeter of up to 10.6m in length.
Following the qualities of a spatial mesh, the roof structure manages to solve the large spans between supports of the project and minimize the edge of the structure along with the necessary amount of steel for its construction.
The main challenge has been to design a spatial mesh that breaks the geometric continuity of the longest overhang in the line of the roof supports while maintaining the mechanical continuity of the structure.
