Repair of the slope of a site near the Mas Calvó, Reus

Ajuntament de Reus

In autumn 2018, Reus was affected by a storm event which led to widespread flooding throughout the region that resulted in significant erosion and damage to a lot of infrastructure. One of the bridges that was significantly damaged was that over the Barranc de Mas Calvó, where the flood event had led to the significant erosion to the eastern abutment and south-eastern wing wall and damage to the vehicular retention barrier.

Windmill were tasked by Reus Townhall with designing the works necessary to repair the bridge and protect it from further erosion. Windmill identified that not only was the erosion caused by the high flow rate in the watercourse, but also by the non-canalised surface run-off from the road itself.

The adopted solution was the construction of an armoured boulder gravity retaining wall, rip-rap and the canalisation of the surface-runoff.

Windmill reacted quickly to ensure that the reopening and safety of the bridge could be achieved as soon as possible.
