Structural analysis of the Chapel of the old Council Seminary
2017-2018
Juan Ángel Reig Martínez

The chapel which is the object of the study, completed in the year 1853, is located in the architectural complex that housed the old Conciliar Seminary of Valencia, now San Vicente Ferrer Faculty of Theology. The building, of academicistic cut, was projected by the architect D. Timoteo Calvo Ibarra, presenting a great austerity so much in its outer envelope, as in its interior decoration.

The structure analyzed is made up of massive ceramic  factory bricks taken with lime mortar and natural stone columns, on which massive ceramic brick arches rest, as well as domes and partitioned domes.

The object of the study was to perform the structural analysis of said chapel, motivated by the pathological state, consisting of a marked cracking of the vaults, lunettes and cruising walls, for which graphic analysis models were made and by means of finite elements of the structural complex.

Through this analysis it was possible to interpret and justify the origin of the aforementioned pathology, as well as to propose different intervention alternatives, aimed at the repair and stabilization of the affected structural elements.
